Last week John came to our school to teach us how to make polystyrene prints. John is an artist and a fisherman and he goes round different schools teaching kids how to do lots of art. At our school we all did print making. We went to the new art room and had our lessons there. In the top photo Ollie is putting ink on his polystyrene block and in the bottom photo John is showing Rylee what her print looks like with two colours.
It was amazing.

Driving Drama

This group of actors came to Omanu and gave us a show about Freckles the Frog and how he cleaned up their environment. They didn't have any props or dress ups but they were really good. We loved the show.

Our New Topic.
We are learning about water. In these photos we are looking at pictures of water and writing what we see in the pictures. We had to look hard and write a sentence about something nobody else might notice.

We have two hard questions to answer.
Where does our glass of water come from?
How old is a glass of water?
Can any one out there tell us what you think?

Miss Thompson

This is our new teacher called Miss Thompson.
She has come to help Mrs Carruthers and she is training to be a real teacher. She helps us do our writing, maths and other stuff. Today she was our teacher for the whole day. Mrs Carruthers and Miss Thompson share the class.
She's nice, and she's a good teacher.
Constable Sarah has come back to see us again.
This time it is because we are learning to keep ourselves safe. We have talked about lots of things like what to do when we need help and who we should ask. We know Constable Sarah would help us and so would our teachers, our parents and our friends.

Did you know that there are lots of shags nesting around the mount?
What makes the Mount so special?

Please write your ideas on our blog to help us with our topic.

We went to a road safety lesson outside by the school driveway. We had cars and scooters to drive and pedestrian crossings to practise on. Did you know that pedestrian crossings are sometimes called zebra crossings? We learnt more about road safety and it was really good fun.

Monday, June 7, 2010

On Friday we all walked around Mauao because we are studying about Walking and Exploring places in our neighbourhood. We went to the Mount because it is an important place to us. Some Mums, Grandmas and Dads came too. We saw three shags' nests, Matakana Island, some boats, the statue who guards the harbour, the buoys that tell the ships the safe place to pass, we saw a man diving at Pilot Bay and lots of other interesting things.
It was cool fun.
We are going to learn about the legend of Mauao this week.
Does anyone know the legend?

Working with the Student Teachers

Today Lily Kate, Liam, Will and Maddy worked with the student teacher to make tornados. We used two bottles each, we chose which colour dye to have in our bottles and we also had glitter to make it look sparkly. We put coloured beads and hearts and stars in too. We used selotape to stick the bottles together. It was exciting listening to the noise it made when we tipped them upside down. We had an interesting happy time working with the student teacher.

Working with Student Teachers

Christian, Caleb, Kaden, Lily May and Hope worked with Ms Nightingale. First she read us a story about the Quangle Wangle's Hat. Next we made animals out of playdough. We made puppies, dragons, dogs, fish, spiders, a person and caterpillars. We liked working with Ms Nightingale and we liked the bright colourful playdough.

Working with Student Teachers

Mr Needs worked with Rylee, Shayden, Benjamin and Matt. First we had a story about a boat then we made some boats using cardboard, tin foil, paper and a straw. We had to test them to see if they would float. We had an interesting time and lots of fun.

Working with Student Teachers

Ollie, Ryan, Sophie, Emillie, Ashton and Haydon worked on mixing milk, dish washing liquid and dye. It turned into all sorts of shapes like sea horses and squids and things. Sophie saw a turtle and Emillie saw some brains. We wrote stories about the things we saw. It was fantastic fun.

Thursday, May 20, 2010

This week we walked up to the Midway shops at the Mount. We all went to the Mt Fresh Shop and bought an apple or a mandarin each. Ryan's Grandma, Maddy's Mum, Matt's Mum, Ashton's Mum and Ollie's Mum came too. It was a long walk but it was fun.

Constructions

One of our favourite things in Room 16 is to build all sorts of things with this construction set. Does anyone know what it is called?
We don't know what it is called and its been in room 16 so long Mrs C doesn't know either. However it is fun to play with and we can make lots of very cool things like 4 roomed houses, space stations, and ships. You have to be very careful when you are building with it because the things are fragile.

Here are Patrick and Donna.
They came to our class because they had a boring life at Mrs C's Mum and Dad's house. They got named after her Mum and Dad whose names are Donald and Patricia. Patrick and Donna got bored at their old house so they came to school to have some adventures. Each night they go home with a different kid and they do all sorts of exciting things at our houses. In this photo they are going for a walk in the garden.
On Friday we walked to Moa Park from our school because we are learning about walking and exploring our neighbourhood. Moa park was fun because it had trees we can climb, swings, slides and a climbing frame. One of the best things was the boat. We pretended it was a pirate ship and had great fun games on it. Ollie's Mum and Carter's Mum came with us.
Where will we walk next Friday?????

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

We are learning about walking and exploring our neighbourhood. We all walked to Waitui Grove Park. (Except for Christian and Emillie because they were away.) Carter's Mum gave us a drink of juice and a bikkie when we got there. Caleb's Mum came too. We had fun playing at the park. We saw some monarch butterflies.

Hello World. We are a class of year one and two students at Omanu School in the sunny Bay of Plenty Tauranga New Zealand. We are clever learners who are doing heaps of interesting things. We are going to share our learning on this blog. (That is when our teacher Mrs C has learnt more about blogging!)
